History of Monaragala Divisional Secretariat

During the ruling of the Sinhala kings, being a separated ruling area the Uva province, has its possession of a long time proud historical era. In CHOOLA VANSA in the 45th GATHA of the 57th paragraph, prince KEERTHI later called as MAHAVIJAYABA the famous king, had lived in a village called MOOLASALA. In Sinhala books the name MOOLASALA has been recorded as MULSALA. Monaragala has been called as the entrance and during the Polanaruwa era it had been named as MULGALA and later   called as MUPPANE which has the similar meaning.

The village which was named as MULGALA has been called as MUPPANE until the near past  through the vocals of the folks and even today told as MAYOORAGIRI by older people  and it has evolved as and used as MONARAGALA. In PAHALA UVA JANAKAVI  it is told that Monaragala has been translated so from the name called AMARAGIRI  in the past. In JANAKAVI records there had lived a Buddhist monk called MAYOORASAKA and behind his name, the name MAYOORAGIRI has been called so.

The locational value of Pahala Uva area of the Uva province which was under the Old Ruhunu Period of Sri Lanka, was the special reason for its importance.  The lower portion of the Mahaweli river which separated the Ruhunu and the Rajarata, had been a boundary related to Uva.  The independence fight campaign organized during the period of kings Dutugemunu and Perakum and against the foreigners gave birth in those Pahala Uva areas. During that period the entrance way to Rajarata was blocked, hence all the army had to stay back at Pahala Uva . The act that was against the Tamil ruling during the Dutugemunu Period and the liberation fight against the British ruling in 1818, were  real examples of the independence fight campaign  which were started at Uva.

Monaragala which  modified its name in the  name of WELLASSA ; the land of prosperity with one lakh  paddy fields, had been proved through that irrigational civilization until the 1818 independence fight. It would prove historical evidence that Wellassa had been a well prosperously populated area.

Monaragala Divisional Secretariat at Monaragala district  in Uva province can be identified as one of the  very special city that is  well identified with historical prosperities. It is visible that there are enough evidences  that there has been sufficient developments economically , socially, politically, and traditionally in this area from the past.

According to the old division of land, Uva being belonged to Ruhuna , it is 3271 square miles in extend . The main rivers Kumbukkana Oya, Kirindi Oya,Manik Ganga,Vil Oya, Heda Oya,Gal Oya enrich the lands of Uva. From the past, Uva had transformed itself by engaging in paddy cultivation near river by areas and also did cultivation by making bunds across the water ways from which Uva possessed a very large paddy cultivation area. Near every lake there had been about lakhs of paddy fields (VEL LAKSHA) which reasoned to name this  place as WELLASSA  because of this famous reason. The prince Saddathissa for the  war campaign  of his brother king Dhutugemunu , had  got the needed paddy for the food supply of his army from Digamadulla area.

Monaragala town is situated at Monaragala Divisional Secretariat area in Monaragala District. Sri Thislen Viharaya of Kahambana, Rajamaha Viharaya of Ganulpatha, Rajamaha Viharaya of Muppane, are some of the very important historically valuable places situated in this divisional area. The JEELON mountain which is of a wonderful climatic condition is a valuable resource to this divisional secretariat area.

The overall climatic condition of this area of the whole district shows a very big decrease of Inter Mid Country Climatic condition. The annual rainfall of this area being over 2500 mm shows a rich range of bio diversity.

The people living here are of agricultural background and their main living source has been paddy cultivation. Along with, there are areas visible away from the town area which engage in short term crops in large scales. One of major exporting crops; rubber cultivation is done vastly and it provides the living source to the people around. And also being the town area largely populated, the land has been limited which has stopped the paddy cultivation of the area   and motivates the people to do other kinds of business matters.

Along with these, through the contribution of the ongoing development programmes in these areas, has resulted the divisional secretariat marching towards success.

Through the development of the infrastructures like water electricity and roads, schools and other educational institutions, garments, other business matters , the division is glittering brightly day by day. As the starting of many destination of the country begins in Monaragla town, it paves for the development of the Monaragla Divisional Secretariat and its surroundings.
